A successful doctorate consists of three steps: writing a thesis, taking an oral examination, and publishing the dissertation. The University Library is responsible for the last step.

The rules for submitting academic theses vary from faculty to faculty. You can find the relevant requirements in your faculty's doctoral or postdoctoral regulations.
You can submit your mandatory copies in person, have a third party submit them, or send them by mail. For shipments from abroad, please note the customs formalities. Packages that are held by customs will be returned to the sender.

You can choose from the following options for publishing your academic thesis:
The academic thesis must be submitted in its entirety in a single PDF file; other formats are not permitted. Additional data must be included with the printed copies on a USB stick and will also be published in the “Electronic Academic Theses” repository.
The PDF file must comply with specific requirements for file names, document properties, and language. Before printing, the thesis must be uploaded to the Electronic Theses Repository. After a formal review, you will receive an e-mail confirming the status of your submission. Only then should you have your mandatory copies printed and submit them to the publishing services for theses.
When publishing a university thesis as a book, 2 to 6 mandatory copies must be submitted, depending on the examination regulations. In addition to the publisher's title page, these must also include a faculty title page, which must be bound directly in front of the publisher's title page. If the title has changed, the original submission title must be used.
In addition, the imprint must state that it is a dissertation from Ludwig-Maximilians-University. Once you have clarified the rights of use, a second publication is also possible free of charge in the Electronic Theses Repository.
If you decide to submit your thesis to a publisher, the University Library, together with a publishing service provider, offers a cost-effective option for publishing your dissertation or habilitation thesis simultaneously as a publisher's publication and digitally in open access: Open Publishing LMU. The requirements for publisher's publications apply to the submission.
